How it all started
Gary McKibben a Dallas architect, specializing in sustainable building projects for over 30 years, decided to move to the country in 2003. He purchased a 200 acre ranch near Meridian, Texas as a weekend getaway. In the course of exploring the property and clearing the land, he discovered many ancient grape vines. This inspired him to plant grapevines and establish a vineyard just for fun. First, it was just an experiment but when his son joined the adventure and the two of them moved to the ranch permanently, they decided to become winemakers in earnest. Red Caboose Winery was born and has been thriving ever since.

Red Caboose Winery produces award winning Texas wines from estate grown grapes. We grow sustainable, natural grapes, by hand, yielding superior quality fruit. This enables us to craft "Old World" wines using long established methods.

The McKibben family has been growing Sustainable wines the natural way since 2003. We believe in Texas, the Texas way of life, Texas agriculture and proudly deliver SUSTAINABLE Texas wines for the Lone Star State.
We take our name from the red caboose Gary McKibben purchased and brought to the property. Once a car at the end of freight trains, the caboose played a critical role in railroad operations, providing shelter for crew of a train, who were required for switching and shunting, to keep a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo, and overheating axles. Our cute red caboose is awaiting a place of honor next to the winery and soon will become part of our overnight accommodations.
Our wines, especially our big red wines like Tempranillo, Syrah, Tannat, Touriga Nacional, Zinfandel, and Black Spanish, also known as Lenoir, continue to win Awards and medals in statewide, national and international competitions. We have won nine best in Texas awards at Grapefest in Grapevine, Texas. Our reds have won over SIXTY medals at Houston Livestock Rodeo Wine Competition. In New York, at Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, our Port won double gold and best of show in 2012. In addition, our family of other wines have won numerous golds and double golds.
We barrel age our wine using American white oak up to thirty six months before bottling and bottle cellaring. We believe excellent wines start with quality grapes. Our wines are produced in the old world tradition from Estate grown grapes, and all our red wines are unfiltered. All our wines are very low in sulfite content and are all natural wines.
Our sustainable winery design philosophy has won state, national, and international Architectural and Environmental awards. With simplicity in mind, we created a winery that is energy efficient and sustainable. Together with advanced geothermal cooling, photo-voltaic solar cells, subterranean thermal mass, rainwater harvesting, and shading, we are able to achieve our energy goals.
